Last night, I went to see this movie with a few friends and we went to see it in a different theater than we usually do. I don't know if it was because of the theater or because the first Boondock Saints had a "cult following" but I was stuck with an audience who was booing when the new Twilight New Moon trailer came on. They cheered when the movie started, every time you saw a character from the first and at the end. I personally hate that, for those of you who know me I love going to movies and I get irritated easily by people around me. I go to sit and watch a movie and not talk about it during, but there are people out there who enjoy talking throughout the movie, it's tremendously disrespectful to everyone else around them. If you want to talk to the person you're with, you should've stayed home and rented a movie. But anyways, I'm getting off track. So, my review:
Synopsis: Boondock Saints II starts off several years after the first film ends. The public now knows that there are two men calling themselves the "saints" who go around killing anyone who can be considered a "bad guy". After the two saints and their father walk into open court and kill a mob boss they disappear and are not seen for years. However, when a priest is murdered in a similar fashion to their killing methods, they are pulled out of retirement and must come back to Boston to find the truth and kill anyone who was associated with the death of this priest. Along their journey from Ireland to Boston, they meet a Hispanic friend who they allow to join the saints crew. These three men wreak havoc throughout Boston while the police are trying to figure out whether it was actually them or the criminals trying to frame them and why all of these murders are taking place.
If you are a fan of the first Boondocks, you should definitely go see this movie when you can. In my opinion, what makes the first Boondocks so good is how the movie is made, how the story is told and my favorite parts are when William Dafoe (detective smecker) goes through each crime scene and describes how the Saints killed their targets. I think they tried to take too much from the first movie. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it very much, but instead of Smecker, it was some female special agent with a southern accent going through each crime scene trying to simulate the type of scene that was in the first film; it just didn't do it justice. If you take the first movie, lower the quality of the story, but increase the violence and attempt at comedy, that is Boondock Saints II. In the first film, they had several smaller characters that were used at the comic relief. In this film, I think they tried to push the comedy aspect too much. There were definitely some funny characters, including one of the detectives from the first (a huuugeee fricken guy) and this new hispanic character Romeo. But a lot of it was just poor attempts at trying to get the audience to laugh when they should've just left the comedy to other characters. The action and violence was ridiculous, much more I think than the first. I'm glad they were able to get all of the actors they wanted to come back, back for this film. I know most (or all if I can remember correctly) of these characters aren't A-List actors so I'm sure they were thrilled to have the opportunity to be back on the big screen, but it was still nice to see the same actors instead of them replacing characters with other faces as we've seen in many other movies.
To sum it all up...Boondock Saints II did not have as strong a story as the first, but they made up for that with an upgrade in action and comedy. If you are a guy or a fan of the first movie or both, I definitely recommend you go see this. I give it a 8.5 out of 10.
You can look for my next review to be about either The Fourth Kind (if I can find a girl to go with so when I get scared I can hide) or The Men Who Stare at Goats. Both come out next weekend, November 6th.
